It is just on become it actually starts to fall apart, although slap-upwards finale rescues it from the ‘red’. Admirably staged and you can smartly dialogued, it has zero high challenge from inside the way of living down its very unsightly title.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Film Bulletin said “The movie moves during the an instant pace, the new discussion are advanced and you may characterisations generally effective. Richard Brody throughout the The fresh Yorker indexed “It terse and tight flick noir is actually predicated on this new romantic and you can professional issues of your identity character, this new violent genius (played by the Knob Powell) at the rear of a trendy unlawful local casino. Brand new film’s copywriter and you will manager, Robert Rossen, sets up an effective multidimensional chess video game, to possess mortal bet, anywhere between Johnny, his employer (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), a good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will an excellent scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose aunt (Nina Foch) spent some time working at gambling enterprise and you will old an excellent corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The fresh new caustically epigrammatic script, new cast’s suavely regulated body language out-of love and you may menace, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you will fashionably assertive photographs (along with his governmental conscience) get this pugnacious but really detailed spectacle a low profile vintage of one’s style.” [ ten ]

Photo possess motion and you may anticipation, and you can certain brief matches out of humor to add flavor. Ace performances from the Dick Powell, just like the a betting home overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, just like the a police inspector, and additionally in the get . While the patch follows a common pattern, the characterizations is actually new additionally the performances adequate to overbalance. Dialog is terse and you may topical, steering clear of the emotional, phoney touching. Uncommon digital camera angles come-along occasionally to help you intensify notice and you may briefly arrest the eye. Strong teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, doubling as the movie director-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, fresh journalist and you will user manufacturer, also aids in rendering it a delicate design.” [ eleven ]

Its mostly an issue of seeing Mr. Powell undergo their paces stylishly while a big cast away from actors and you will stars give him conventional support. Evelyn Keyes performs the favorable nothing lady which brings out brand new best in your and Ellen Drew ‘s the sleek and you can slinky vixen just who will get him into the jams. Thomas Gomez is actually oily as the villain and you can Lee J. Cobb does a different in a position journey due to the fact a weary police inspector exactly who finally shuts the way it is. Significant amounts of ingesting and you will puffing is carried out of the most of the worried.” [ twelve ]
